Batik not only describes a technique of wax-resisting on cloth but also the wonder of Malaysian identity. As the origin of Batik culture, Batik resident artists should be preserved and appreciated as their batik art still delivers the uniqueness and identity of Malaysian Batik. This thesis envisions the creation of a ‘Contemporary Batik Kampung’ through the preservation of batik art and infrastructure that complements the existing fabric. Integrated with vernacular attributes, the contemporary aspect of design proposal lies in prefabrication of batik module, flood-resistant material selection, detachable temporary shelter and eventually creating a vibrant and flood-resilient batik backyard.
