Engineering in a better way
Mechanical Engineering is one of the most versatile engineering disciplines. It applies principles of sciences and engineering to understand the characteristics of mechanical systems. As such, this programme contributes to scientific knowledge and bridges the gap between the fields of study like mathematical analysis, computational methods, engineering design and production. The Mechanical Engineering programme seeks to combine excellence in education and research with service to society. This programme aims to provide graduates with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of the various state-of-art mechanical systems and devices. The main objective of this programme is to produce engineering graduates with the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of science and engineering fundamentals as well as gain an in-depth technical competence in the mechanical engineering discipline. Students will also learn to function effectively as an individual and in a group, as an effective team member with the capacity to be a leader or manager.
Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering
The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering was founded in 2005 with an initial student number of 30. Since then, the department has grown to become one of the largest academic units within the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science. The department comprises of 30 academic staffs with 26 staffs (or 87%) with PhD qualification, including 16 staffs with Professional Engineer (PEng) / Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification.
We currently offer two undergraduate programmes. Both the programmes have been accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) through the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC). Our technical, design and project based curriculum will provide budding engineers with the expertise to solve real-life and complex engineering problems, and prepare them for the global engineering challenges of the 21st Century.

Career Prospects
Graduates may seek employment in a wide range of industries such as those concerning with the manufacturing, servicing and production of machines, tools, robots, system and equipment of air-conditioning, automotive and many others. They can serve in a wide variety of roles such as production engineers, process engineers, design engineers, manufacturing engineers, quality assurance engineers, automation engineers, simulation engineers, mechanical project consultants and research scientists, just to name a few.
Highlights
Students are introduced to the current design software including Solidworks, Mastercam, AutoDesk and ANSYS, and the best practices of the industry at the early stage and apply in the form of assignments and integrated design projects
UTAR has signed several MOU with local and industrial partners. For example, Infineon Technologies (Kulim) Sdn Bhd, Daikin Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Press Metal Bhd, Boilermech Holdings Berhad, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers Perak, etc. These provide students the opportunities to expose to the industry through their internship and improve their competency when they are graduated
UTAR receives support from various professional bodies locally and internationally. For example Malaysian Iron & Steel Industry Federation, Institute of Engineers Malaysia, Institute of Mechanical Engineers (UK), Institute of Engineering and Technology (UK), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineer (US) etc. These provide student a platform to grow in their interest profession and expose to the professionals even before they graduated
Our Success Stories
