Engineers are often responsible for designing and maintaining infrastructure such as the electrical power systems used by the general public, and in setting up their management structures and maintenance processes. This programme provides an opportunity for students to obtain knowledge on the latest technologies of electricity generation, transmission, distribution and state-of-the-art electronics within the context of developing technology and human resources. It aims to train prospective engineers to design better systems and structures for better operational safety and efficiency.

Career Prospects

Graduates from this professional engineering programme may find employment in the electronic, communication and electrical industries. They may be assigned to work in a wide variety of areas such as design and manufacturing of electrical and electronic products, operation and maintenance, research and development, sales and marketing, consultancy and education. Besides, they can also serve in the popular telecommunication sector including cellular phone, radio and television, telephony and satellite communications.

Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering is one of the programmes offered by the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (D3E). The other three programmes offered by D3E are Electronic and Communication Engineering, Electronics (Computer Networking), and Physics. These programmes are recognized by the Malaysian Public Services Department (JPA) and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), providing an opportunity for students to master the basics of engineering principles underlying electrical, electronic and communication engineering. The programmes are in-line with the state-of-art of technologies in electrical, electronics and communication engineering. In addition, the programmes help to develop students’ ability to analyze, identify, formulate and generate specific solutions for the problems encountered. At the end of these programmes, students will be able to develop an appreciation of the role of an engineer in designing better systems.

As an effort for UTAR to become not only excellence in teaching but also in research, these programmes are actively engaged in R&D with the financial support from the University, Government Funds such as FRGS, AAIBE, and other industrial grants. The academic staff members have been actively participated in competitions in the national and international levels and received prestigious awards, including International APICTA Award, MSC Malaysia APICTA, Invention and Innovation Malaysia, National Instruments Graphical System Design Achievement Award, International Technology Expo (ITEX), and to name a few. On top of that, the academic members collaborate closely with industry and provide consultancy services. Numerous industrial visits have been organized by the department to give students an insight into the operation and the working environment in the industry. These industrial visits supplement the various theories acquired in the classroom for an understanding.
