CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS!
Univeristi Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) once again emerged as champion at the Nehemiah Design Competition 2016 at Monash University Malaysia in Bandar Sunway.
The competition which was held on October 18 this year attracted 18 teams from a number of institutions of higher learning who submitted their proposal. Of this, eight teams were shortlisted. Bagging RM5,000 cash prize, the team, Future Light from UTAR was exhilarated when their team was picked as the winner for this year by a panel of four independent judges from Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), CIDB Malaysia, Master Builders Association of Malaysia (MBAM) and Chartered Institute of Highway & Transport (CIHT).
Team members comprised Lee Yee Linn, Alice Lim Pei San, Tan Sheng Hua, Yap Ying Qin and Wong Huei Hann.
Two other teams, ACES from UTAR and BOB from Inti, also took away RM3,000 and RM2,000 in cash prizes for both first- and second-runners up.
This is the fifth edition of the Nehemiah Design Competition since the company, Nehemiah Reinforced Soil Sdn Bhd took up the competition as its corporate social responsibility initiative. Gracing the occasion this year was Works Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof who encouraged the participants to provide innovative solutions to a real-life issue relating to very soft soil along a 1-km section of the Pan Borneo Highway, near the town of Sibu.
This year, also saw the debut of the Lau Phek Tin series of lectures, which featured guest speakers, Dato’ Ir. Dr Gue See Sew, Chief Executive Officer of G&P Professionals Sdn Bhd, one of the top five largest engineering consultancy firms in Malaysia; Dr Eunho Lee, Chief R&D Center Manager at Towoong Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. in Seoul, Korea; and Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Low Kaw Sai, Associate Professor with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).
According to Nehemiah’s chairman, Ir. Tan Cheng Chong, the series of lectures, which attracted two Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points approved by the Board of Engineers, Malaysia, were held in loving memory of the company founder’s late mother, Madam Lau Phek Tin.
“The late Lau was a primary school teacher who was passionate about educating the younger generation of Malaysians, in particular education for the poor and needy and the female gender,” he said.
On behalf of the company, Tan also donated RM10,000 in cash in honour of the late Lau to Monash University Malaysia’s Civil Engineering department for the purchase of reference books. “This is a small contribution we try to make every year to enhance the civil engineering profession in Malaysia,” he said. “Students need to have access to good engineering books that can help to enhance their knowledge in the civil engineering field.”
By hosting the competition and the lecture series, Tan said that he hopes members of the academia and practitioners in the field will at least have the chance to come together once a year. “We are trying to build a bridge between the students who are still pursuing their university programme and those who are already in the field for many years,” he added.
