Department of Internet Engineering & Computer Science

The Department of Internet Engineering and Computer Science (DIECS) at the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), Sungai Long Campus is an active and vibrant department that is strongly focused on achieving excellence in teaching and research. There are 16 academic staffs in the department, which includes one professor and one associate professor. In addition, there is also an adjunct professor in the department. All of our staffs are either PhD holders or Masters holders with minimum five years of working experience. Many have professional qualifications such as MIEEE.

The department currently administers one full time undergraduate programme (Bachelor of Science(Hons) Software Engineering) and one postgraduate programme by coursework (Master of Information Systems). It also hosts a MIMOS Center of Excellence (COE) research lab in the area of vision and image processing, where a variety of research projects and industrial collaborations have been ongoing since 2008 with organizations such as FRIM, JobStreet and MDeC. The Center for Computing and Intelligent Systems (CCIS) research group is also based here, which comprises 41 academic staffs and students from various faculties (LKC FES, FICT, FSc, FEGT). Staffs from the department are involved in a variety of consultancy roles both with external companies and educational institutions such as Wiltek Homeware, Segi College, EV-Dynamic, Vitrox and Clarify Consulting.

The department and the faculty are part of the Microsoft Dreamspark and Oracle Advanced Computer Science programs, both of which provide students and staff access to the latest software and related trainings and certifications from these companies. We have also recently been involved in the Google Web Academy and AppleĀ iOS developer programme, which again facilitates technology transfer in the cutting-edge areas of cloud computing and mobile application development to both staff and students. This is reflective of our constant drive to ensure relevance in the teaching material that we deliver to our students.

Some of our annual activities include an industry visit by staff and students to major national ICT centers; the most recent being NTT MSC Cyberjaya and MIMOS Technology Park Malaysia. Participants had a chance to witness first hand the internal operation of a complex data center, as well as being involved in some interesting motion detection oriented computer games. Students from the Software Engineering programme have participated in and successfully reached the finals of the Malaysian chapter of the Microsoft Imagine Cup competition (the premier national programming competition) in 2011 and 2012. The department also regularly hosts talks by a variety of technopreneurs, IT CEOs, software developers as well as researchers; as a way of ensuring that students gain a realistic perspective of working life in addition to remaining updated on the latest industrial trends.
